THE METZ-LANDEROS ARCHIVAL NARRATIVE IN BRIEF©—
Leon Claire Metz (1930-2020) | Legendary Historian of the Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico Region : Co-founded Travel The Pass in 1991 alongside socio-cultural researcher Sylvia Gevália Landeros. Since its initiation, the organization has stood as the definitive bi-national, borderland pillar of academic and civic excellence. This legacy is anchored by the complete collection of Metz’s historical works and codified by the 2024 City of El Paso Proclamation honoring his life’s achievements and Landeros's essential institutional leadership.
Under the creative pen of Ms. Landeros, this foundational brick of 35 years of research has been transformed into a sophisticated evolution of regional documentation, beginning with The Southwest Chronicle in 2008, progressing into the innovative framework of The Big Bang Journal in 2017, and culminating in the current MADZINE—Complete Works of Leon Metz The Official Borderland Souvenir ; featuring the exclusive, unpublished masterpiece, MEXICAN THUNDER—Leon Metz's last penned manuscript—historical research formulated by Leon and co-creator and protector of intellectual property, Sylvia Gevália Landeros.
By bridging this bedrock historical record with modern STEM education and NASA exploration, the organization has expanded the region's global footprint through the production of the first Bi-national Tri-State Region Multilingual Welcome Channel in the early 2000s, the publication of the first official tourist magazine for Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, in the early 1990s, and an international campaign utilizing a fleet of Mesilla Valley Transportation freight carriers as 'mobile billboards' across the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2001.
Building upon the prestigious foundation established by the Texas Historical Commission and the Western Writers of America in their recognition of Leon C. Metz, Travel The Pass now honors that same standard of excellence by bestowing our own highest distinctions. We are proud to announce Estela Casas, the legendary El Paso, Texas, journalist and philanthropist, as the inaugural recipient of the first Pillar Of Heart Award. This honor recognizes her decades of service as a cornerstone of our region's identity and her tireless advocacy for our community's health and spirit. Furthermore, we present the IronWood Star Award to Pizza Properties, Inc.–known throughout the region as Peter Piper Pizza–to recognize their ongoing commitment, enduring dedication, and vital support in helping us preserve our bi-national, tri-state region history.
